Constraints on Asparagus Production: The Association of Ophiomyia simplex (Diptera: Agromyzidae) and Fusarium spp
نویسندگان
چکیده
Production of asparagus (Asparagus offi cinalis L.) is globally constrained by the “early decline” syndrome. The primary causal agents of early decline include Fusarium proliferatum (Matsushima) Nirenberg, F. oxysporum Wollenw. f. sp. asparagi S.I. Cohen, and F. subglutinans Wollenw. & Reinking. These pathogens together contribute to Fusarium crown and root rot (FCRR). Damage to asparagus stems, especially by the asparagus miner (Ophiomyia simplex Loew [Diptera: Agromyzidae]), has been associated with and shown to exacerbate FCRR. This review synthesizes the current information on this tripartite interaction, describes management strategies and their ef! cacy, and highlights needed research. Opportunities for future control of the asparagus miner and associated FCRR are presented. Research areas of interest include investigating the role of semiochemicals in the asparagus miner–Fusarium spp. interaction, identifying effective biological controls for the asparagus miner, and determining source populations of asparagus miner in new asparagus plantings. The development of the asparagus miner (Ophiomyia simplex Loew; Diptera: Agromyzidae) in temperate zones: a degree-day model.
BACKGROUND The asparagus miner is a putative vector of Fusarium spp., which have been implicated in globally declining asparagus production. Growers currently apply broad-spectrum insecticides for the asparagus miner, but lack management guidelines for adequately controlling the pest. Our aims were (1) to determine the lower developmental threshold of the asparagus miner, (2) develop and valida...
متن کاملThe parasitoids of the asparagus miner (Diptera: Agromyzidae): field parasitism and the influence of food resources on life history.
The goals of this study were to identify pupal parasitoids of the asparagus miner, Ophiomyia simplex Loew (Diptera: Agromyzidae), and examine the effect of different diets and floral resources on the lifespan of adult asparagus miners and their parasitoids. We also measured the effect of parasitism on stem damage caused by the asparagus miner. The identity and abundance of the parasitoids of th...
متن کاملPatterns of spatial and temporal distribution of the asparagus miner (Diptera: Agromyzidae): implications for management.
The asparagus miner is an obligatory feeder on asparagus and a putative vector for pathogenic fungi implicated in the early decline of asparagus fields. To date, the distribution of the asparagus miner over space and time is poorly understood. Our study evaluated the spatial and temporal pattern of adult asparagus miners in commercial asparagus fields in Michigan in 2011 and 2012. We sampled ad...
